The units are designed to prevent external explosions by containing any sparks or flames generated by the equipment inside them. This prevents potentially explosive atmospheres (gases, vapours etc) or materials outside the equipment from being ignited. The housings can have a wiper and Pan and tilts are fitted with preset potentiometers.
