Schools often have no cohesive policy for CCTV installations. This often results in them installing a variety of systems, offering varying levels of service, quality and, most important, value. Staff may not be experts in security and sometimes find that they have spent a great deal of money on something that ends up being the wrong tool for the job. It is for this reason that we are often asked to visit schools, which are considering CCTV installation. Although price is an important consideration, it is just as important that a system supplies value for money, and is able to adequately fulfill the function for which it is designed.

Schools face a variety of risks from potential intruders who may threaten students and staff to vandals and arsonists intent on damaging school property. For educational establishments the outcomes can be particularly disastrous, not only the costs involved, but also more significantly in terms of lost educational opportunity for the children affected.

A generation ago, there might have been an occasional theft or fight at school, but the greater incidence of bullying, with increasing levels of violence, has meant that safety and security have emerged as the foremost concerns for everyone involved in education.

According to some administrators, internal CCTV cameras should be an essential feature in every school along with access control, intrusion detection and other physical security measures. These can give children, their parents and staff increased confidence about their safety.

It is important that CCTV usage complies with government guidelines and is in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Human Rights Act.

ClearView's fully scalable and networkable video solutions can be designed to provide a system that can record and retrieve the highest quality images simply and efficiently.

Three reasons to use CCTV :

PREVENTION

  • Deter graffiti, vandalism, disruption

PROTECTION

  • Stop unauthorised entry

MONITORING & MANAGEMENT

  • Discourage student misbehaviour e.g. bullying, truancy, smoking and substance abuse

A modern school security system, incorporates cameras, digital video recorders and intelligent video management software.

Security does not begin and end with the equipment installed. The system will be only as good as the monitoring and recovery operations applied to it.

A security system must also be incorporated into a safety education program for staff, students, parents and the community.

Wireless hand-held devices can also added to the security system to allow staff or security personnel to be alerted in real time, through streamed video images, to potential security or safety issues. Evidential quality digital video sequences can be exported to CD or DVD.

Security systems can also be used to reinforce positive things. They can be used to reward good behaviour caught on camera, such as picking up litter. They can also be used to provide interview practice for students with the recordings being replayed as a training aid.
